About Lisa

I’m Lisa Summers, founder of Joy Aligned Life.

I help purpose-driven women lead from joy, not exhaustion.
I believe joy is source of leadership, vitality, and truth—a birthright, not an afterthought.

Through retreats, coaching, speaking, consulting, and my Seven Seeds of Joy framework, I guide women to reclaim joy in practical, embodied ways so the life they have built can feel as alive on the inside as it may look from the outside.

Why Joy Aligned Life Exists

For a long time, I thought joy and purpose were a tradeoff.

I believed you could pour yourself into meaningful work, service, leadership, family, community, and causes you care about or you could feel deeply alive in your own life, but not both.

So I did what many purpose-driven women do.

  • I kept showing up.

  • Kept giving.

  • Kept leading.

  • Kept carrying.

  • Kept being the strong one.

From the outside, my life looked full and meaningful. But inside, I was learning how easily purpose can become depletion when joy is treated like something you earn later or sacrifice completely.

Eventually, I realized something that changed everything:
Joy and purpose grow in the same soil.

Joy is not the reward waiting at the end of the work. It is the fuel that makes the work sustainable.

When joy and purpose move together, your life does not become less meaningful. It becomes more honest, more alive, and more deeply rooted in what is true.

That realization reshaped my life and became the heart of Joy Aligned Life.

The Road That Brought Me Here

Before founding Joy Aligned Life, I spent more than 30 years in nonprofit leadership, public service, education, advocacy, communication, and capacity building.

My work has taken me from the halls of the United States House and Senate to prison classrooms, from community development to nonprofit consulting, from public leadership to deeply personal spiritual formation.

Across every setting, I saw the same truth again and again:

Purpose-driven people often give until there is very little left.

And they have so much more to offer when they are lit up from the inside out.

That is why my work centers not only the health of the mission, but the wellbeing of the person carrying it.

My background includes:

  • 30+ years in nonprofit leadership, advocacy, public service, education, and capacity building

  • Experience in the United States House and Senate, prison classrooms, community development, and nonprofit consulting

  • Work as a communication professional, international speaker, podcast host, transformational coach, and spiritual director

  • Author of Real. Big. Love. The Difference Maker’s Guide to Gain Greater Clarity, Energy, and Impact for Your Cause and Life

  • Creator of the Seven Seeds of Joy framework

The result is work that is grounded and practical and makes room for the sacred.

The Seven Seeds of Joy

At the heart of Joy Aligned Life is the Seven Seeds of Joy:

Clarity — knowing what is true for you now.
Worth — remembering you do not have to earn your aliveness.
Grace — releasing perfection and emotional weight toward yourself or others.
Wonder — reopening curiosity, beauty, awe, and possibility.
Belonging — coming home to yourself, others, nature, and life.
Expression — letting your voice, creativity, desire, and truth move.
Purpose — allowing your joy and your contribution to grow together.

These seeds help joy become more than a beautiful idea.

They help it become a relationship, a rhythm.
Joy becomes practical and embodied as a way of living and leading from a fuller cup.

A Little More Personally

My own joy practice is not separate from my work. It helps me align with what matters daily — in my leadership, relationships, health, creativity, and the way I move through the world.

These days, I split my life between Colorado Springs and Sugar Land, Texas, with my husband, Jim, our Siberian cat Perseus, who is absolutely convinced he runs the household, and our golden retriever Grace, who reminds me daily to practice what her name means.

The first time I stepped onto the mountain land where I now host retreats, I felt peace. I felt joy. I felt the kind of exhale I knew I had to share.

That is what Joy Aligned Life is here to offer:

A way back to yourself.
A way back to aliveness.
A way back to the joy that has been waiting for your attention.

A Different Way Forward

If you have been leading from exhaustion, carrying more than your share, or waiting for joy to arrive once everything else is finally handled, I would love to offer you another way.

Your purpose is big. Your joy deserves to match it.

Joyfully,
Lisa Summers
